My Drupal 8 theme won’t do a full install with “MySQL server has gone away” error message

Last Updated: Apr 18, 2018 08:02PM EEST
Recently, we received a couple of reports like the following, from users attempting to install our Drupal 8 themes:

I am following the process laid out in the READ.ME.  I have uploaded the files to my Drupal directory, and have imported the database entries from the MySQL dump.  However, when trying to access the site, I get this error:  “MySQL server has gone away”.

The error message “MySQL server has gone away” usually indicates that your environment runs out of resources during the first load of the website.

First of all, please make sure that your server environment is compatible with the minimum requirements for Drupal 8.

https://www.drupal.org/docs/8/system-requirements

You can find more specific php.ini settings in the following article under the Shortlist table:
https://www.drupal.org/docs/8/system-requirements/drupal-8-php-requirements

A couple of settings (in php.ini or my.cnf) that, by default, are usually set too low and could be causing the issue you are facing are the following:

  • max_allowed_packet
  • max_execution_time
  • max_input_time

We suggest that you increase those according to the resources of your system. Specifically, the max_allowed_packet (in my.cnf) is usually set too low. We suggest that you set this to at least 32M.

Make sure that you restart the corresponding services of your server (Apache, MySQL etc) to ensure that these changes are applied.
