How to follow Facebook sharing best practices through Open Graph tags in our themes

Last Updated: Jul 15, 2016 01:43PM EEST
Quite often, the following question may occur:

“Sharing on Facebook grabs text outside of the article content, is there a way to fix that?”
“Sharing on Facebook does not display the correct main article image, is there a way to fix that?”

Facebook uses the Open Graph meta tags to collect information regarding what to publish in the shared post.

If the website does not contain such meta tags Facebook tries to guess what the main image is and the main text. This may result in picking the wrong content, sometimes.

You can find more information about the above at the following URLs:
https://developers.facebook.com/docs/sharing
https://developers.facebook.com/docs/sharing/best-practices

In order to support Open Graph tags in your website, we suggest you install and configure the Metatag module (https://www.drupal.org/project/metatag). This will allow you to configure the generation of these meta tags based on the content of each node.

That should also fix the issue above.
